Dear Immanuel family,
Transitions: "a passage from one state, stage, subject or place to another." Even happy transitions can be strenuous.
Summer contains built-in transitions and this summer has meant time to visit family, attend my niece’s wedding, re-roof the house, fix broken things and spend some extra time with friends via email, phone or over coffee. Ryan transitioned from grad school and is home hunting for work. Both Bill’s and my parents continue be independent, but yesterday my father headed to the barber shop 2 miles away and ended up a "silver alert," missing for 12 hours and found 200 miles away. (It is strange seeing your own dad in the news.) This signals inevitable transitions to come and we are reflecting on needs and options before us. Pray for wisdom as we face the rollout of things we don’t really control. Many of you know all about that.
Schools are resuming, and with them women’s Bible studies. For more years than I can remember, I have spent summers "parked" in a book of the Bible and then shaped it into a Bible study for the school year. This summer has found me hanging out in Proverbs, trying to figure out how a group could study this remarkable book…and wondering if I’m a fool to even attempt it. We are going to look at "Relationship Counsel" from this book, which includes pride and humility, anger, the effects of our words, self-deception, short vs. long-term thinking, etc. It’s kind of like being mentored by Solomon, the primary contributor and – at his time – wisest man on earth. Pray for us and for Bible studies resuming all across the land, that God’s counsel would find a home in our hearts. We should have some interesting discussions and application points.
THANK YOU for your multi-leveled support over all the transitions of my life in recent years. May our transitions introduce us to new levels of God’s grace as we rely on our ever faithful Shepherd.
With love,
Mary
